As specialist shipbrokers, we have access to a wide range of grab dredgers.
Grab dredgers are generally self-propelled hoppers which work as stationary vessels. They are equipped with a grab and provided with a hold to collect the dredged material..
They are designed primarily for maintaining port basins and dredging in confined spaces which other dredger types are unable to reach. Because they are uncomplicated, mechanical units, they are easily and inexpensively maintained.
Other advantages of a grab dredger are that it can work in very deep water – the limited being effectively the length of the cables on which the grab is hung.
Depending on the size of the grab it can lift large rocks.
A limitation is that their production rates are low and cannot compete like-for-like with suction dredgers on more average materials in average water depths where movement is not so constrained. They are not effective with fine silts, which can often slip through.
